The collective term for AI adoption in Japan’s manufacturing sector — heavy industry, automotive, precision machinery, and related verticals. Early adoption centered on IoT sensor data and predictive maintenance (detecting line failures before they occur), but from the late 2020s, application has been expanding rapidly into indirect operations such as finance, procurement, and HR.

The industry is transitioning from siloed proof-of-concept projects toward enterprise-wide transformation programs driven by executive mandate. Legacy system integration costs and on-site engineer skill gaps remain the primary obstacles to faster adoption.
